The Building Blocks Business Unit focuses on high-quality synthetic intermediates. Its activities are based on the continual development and refinement of a broad range of products, using its technological expertise, back integration of most essential raw materials, and above all its market knowledge.

The Building Blocks Business Unit offers products for diverse applications and markets and maintains its competitive edge with a product portfolio that anticipates its customers’ changing needs and requirements.

Degussa Building Blocks produces and markets high quality synthetic intermediates, including alkoxides, alkyl chlorides, pyrimidines, cyanamide, dicyandiamide, cyanuric chloride, cyanoacetates, malonates, ortho esters, NCN derivatives, phenolic antioxidants, and triacetoneamine derivatives, as well as specialty building blocks.

Applications include adhesives and sealants, paints and coatings, cosmetics, intermediates for agriculture and pharmaceuticals, textile specialties, as well as additives for polymers, plastics, fuels and lubricants.

With almost 2,600 employees, the Building Blocks Business Unit generated sales of about € 714 million in 2005 and now maintains production facilities at 14 sites in Europe and the NAFTA region.

Since January 1, 2006, the Business Unit also produces and markets hydrogen peroxide to pulp, textile and chemical manufacturers within the Active Oxygen business line. Furthermore Active Oxygen produces peracetic acid for disinfection, sterilization and chemical synthesis, as well as TMT^® for the percipitation of heavy metals in waste water and flue gases.

Since October 1, 2006 Degussa places the NCN business at its Trostberg and Schalchen sites in Bavaria, Germany, into a new legal entity known as AlzChem Trostberg GmbH, a strong mid-sized player with clear regional roots.
