Jugend forscht
In the case of "Jugend forscht", one of the most widely acclaimed and popular scientific competitions of its kind in Germany, Degussa was on board right from the very outset. In addition to providing financial and organizational support, the Degussa experts focused mainly on the cooperation with young researchers. In the year 2004, for example, five students from Bochum and Namibia had the opportunity to join in with Degussa experts in the preparation of a field test involving superabsorbers for water storage in Africa. In their investigations, the students had addressed the question as to whether introducing superabsorbers to the soil can improve wheat crops in areas with unfavorable climatic conditions. The excellent work the students performed was also acknowledged by the Special Environmental Award of the Federal State of North-Rhine Westphalia.
In 2005, Degussa supported the Regional competition in Bavaria by providing prizes, board and lodging, as well as an "Olympics at sea" competition enabling participants to get to know each other better. |

Science Years
Degussa supports the Science Years initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science by its own activities. In the Einstein Year 2005 the emphasis was on primary schools in the Frankfurt region, among others. In special project classes the schoolchildren were introduced to the mysteries of physics and chemistry in a play oriented manner. In the Year of Technology 2004 the Degussa subsidiary Röhm joined forces with the Hesse Design Center to familiarize young people with topics revolving around PLEXIGLAS® and light. |

Girls' Day
Every year, the Federal Ministry of Education and Science joins in with its partners and hosts the nation-wide "Girls' Day" that is geared to introducing young girls from the age of 13 onwards to the fascinating world of technology and natural sciences. In supporting this initiative, Degussa opens its doors at many corporate locations. In connection with expert guidance, the young technology enthusiasts have the opportunity to try their hand at operating a Bunsen burner or welding equipment. |
